The best travel photography happens with technical skill and creative intent. Inquisitive nature and the right opportunities also help.

We have designed our 3 day travel photography workshop to engross you in a northern Thai cultural experience. Photographers of any level can improve their skills and creativity. You must bring along your own inquisitive nature.

Kevin Landwer-Johan is the travel photography workshop leader. He will teach you camera skills and guide you. He’ll also guide you in shaping and sharpening your creative intent.

There are plenty of photo opportunities during this 3 day workshop. Many are off the beaten track and unique to our photography workshops. Capturing the most stunning Thai travel photographs is the focus of this workshop.

During this photography workshop we cover:

  • Portrait photography
  • Ethnic minorities
  • An elephant and beautiful Thai model
  • Street photography

  • Doi Inthanon National Park and surrounds

We are happy to run this workshop with one to four participants and are flexible with the dates. One of the days must include a Saturday or Sunday for us to be able to photograph at the rural markets. (Please contact us if you have a non-photographer partner who would like to join you.)

Thai Experience Photography Workshop Outline

This ‘live in’ photography workshop over 3 days has the aim of being encouraging and inspiring. Accommodation is at our bed and breakfast. We will meet Chiang Mai, Thailand on the morning of the first day.

People

Our itinerary includes a session with beautiful Thai model in a traditional costume. She’ll be interacting with at least one elephant. Photographing a model and elephant together is full of surprises There are also challenges and stunning results. This is a must have fun and unique travel photography workshop experience.

We also visit one of our favorite locations for photography, Baan Thong Luang. This is an “eco-agricultural hill tribes village”. Pansa and I have been visiting here for many years with our photography workshops. We have built up some lovely relationships with the people there.

This village provides the best opportunity to photograph northern Thai ethnic minority people. You will learn the art of photographing people and creating engaging portraits. Here they wear traditional clothing and live in customary homes. Our relationship with them means they are relaxed, so you will get better portraits of them. The more you engage with these people the more people will engage with the photos you make. If you are not sure about visiting this type of location, please take a look at this article on the subject.

Places

We also visit rural areas for landscape photography on Thailand’s highest mountain. Here you’ll learn more about developing your natural eye to ‘see’ a photo. We also dig deeper into the technical aspects of how to best capture the beauty you see.

Street Photography

We spend a morning at the rural weekend markets. Here we find ourselves among hundreds of locals buying everything from livestock to fried rice. This is a street photography sensation to experience. The locals are relaxed, colorful and open to being photographed.

We’ll spend an afternoon in a Karen village photographing portraits. For this we’ll use Kevin’s natural light outdoor studio. You’ll isolate people against a plain background without them having to leave the comfort of their village.

Pick up is at 7:30 am. We will spend the morning at a boutique elephant camp. Photographing with an elephant and a beautiful model wearing a traditional Thai costume.

Doi Inthanon National Park Photography

We spend the day up the mountain. Doi Inthanon is Thailand’s highest peak and a national park. It provides stunning environments for creative photography. In the park we’ll have opportunities to photograph in the forest along walkways. There are also viewpoints, waterfalls and the Royal Project gardens.

    Testimonials

I cannot say enough good about Kevin. There are a lot of amazing photographers in this world, but not many are truly exceptional teachers. Kevin truly know how to put the art of photography and the technical aspects of the camera into the right light for each one of his students. He certainly did so for me. I’ve been traveling for 9 years now and have been a self taught mature photographer for a good majority of that time. I was looking to step my craft up a few notches but just couldn’t seem to get past a certain level… I knew I was grasping all that my camera could do, and the frustration of not being able to capture a shot just the way I wanted it was beginning to kill my creativity. Then, along came Kevin. He was the key to unlocking the magic! Answered so many questions and inspired so many more, then gave me the answers with hands on experience. I’m inspired all over again. Thank you Kevin!!!
Kevin and Pansa introduced me to the local life in Chiang Mai, which allowed me to feel more comfortable in approaching people in the markets and later with the hill tribes. Along the way I was learning from a well respected professional photographer, who showed excitement for my photography as well as any photo opportunity that came our way. I look forward to my next journey with Kevin and Pansa, where we can create an even more special adventure over a few days. I don’t normally write reviews so this was special for me and I am sure it will be just as special for you.
