Learn the skill of black and white photography when you visit Chiang Mai. During this workshop we will explore the art and technique of creating stunning monochrome photographs. I spent years working mainly with black and white film in my early time as a photographer. This was back in the days of film, but for this workshop, I teach about digital black and white and how to make the most stunning monochrome images using your modern camera.

About This Photography Workshop

Duration: 8:30am until around 3pm

This travel and street photography workshop focuses on teaching how to capture great photos wherever you are. No matter what level of photography you’re at, there’s something for everyone who joins.

The locations we visit include areas of local interest and significance. They are chosen to show you some areas tourists often miss out on. In these places you’ll capture genuinely unique images of Chiang Mai.

You will learn composition techniques and how to look more carefully. We’ll demonstrate the impact point of view has when framing your subject. You will gain a new appreciation of what you see when you look through your camera.

Northern Thai people generally are not shy about being photographed. In every culture being sensitive and polite is important. We will address this subject as we photograph the locals in their everyday work environments.

Capturing the ‘decisive moment’ and story telling with your photos are two other topics we will talk about throughout the day. I’ve taught many beginners and more experienced photographers to recognize and capture images that best illustrate their travel experiences.

After lunch it’s often uncomfortably hot outdoors. So, we will sit in a cool, relaxed environment, enjoy an iced coffee, soda, or fruit drink and look over the images you have made during the morning. You’ll receive constructive critique on your photos from the morning sessions along with tips on choosing your best images.

Learn to Think in Monochrome

Black and White Workshop [1 Day]

On this one day workshop you’ll learn to think in monochrome. This is the key to capturing stunning black and white photographs.

During this workshop we explore …

  • Light, contrast, and tone
  • When to photograph in black and white
  • Managing your exposure settings for monochrome
  • Conversion and editing

About the Workshop
Duration: 8:30am until around 3pm

We start the day with a conversation about thinking in black and white. This is important to understand so that you can best know what will make interesting photos without color.

When I learned to take black and white photographs it was essential to think in monochrome because there was no option. With a roll of black and white film in my camera the resulting images were only ever shades of gray. Many people using digital cameras don’t think in black and white when taking their pictures. They’ll only consider converting some images during the editing process.

When you think in black and white, the photographs you take will make stronger monochromatic images once you convert them. During the workshop you’ll gain a greater appreciation for how to capture images that will convert into fabulous black and whites.

Out and About in Chiang Mai

After this conversation and a coffee, we’ll explore hand picked locations that lend themselves to being photographed in black and white.

The variety of subjects and lighting conditions provide many opportunities for street photography, people, architecture, abstract minimalism, and much more.

I’ll encourage you to use Manual Exposure Mode on your camera during this workshop. If you’re not yet familiar with taking photos using Manual Mode, I’ll walk you though how it’s done. This is by far the best option when working in black and white because it gives you the level of control that’s required to capture the best results.

After Lunch

After lunch we’ll set up laptops and work on the photos from our morning session.

Converting images from color RAW files involves a lot more than simply de-saturating the colors. Sure, full de-saturation produces monochromatic images, but often they’ll look rather dull and lifeless.

You’ll learn how to evaluate the tone range in your images and how to make choices concerning them. As you edit, you’ll see the photographs you’ve taken during the morning come to life as stunning black and white pictures.

Testimonial

My Wife and I, had a wonderful day with Kevin and Pansa in Chiang Mai, in the first week of June. The photography experience was a real valuable eye opener for us. Both Kevin and Pansa are great communicators of their visions and concepts of their photographic skills. From the initial discussions over a coffee, to the market experience and the temples, and a great chat over a delightful lunch, the complete day was an enjoyable day. This workshop was a great way to start our month in and around Chiang Mai, and the tips and new ideas from that day, inspired us both, to enjoy our photography on a new level.

Testimonial

What was so wonderful about this workshop was that very quickly Kevin and Pansa assessed my skills and then tailored the day to my ability. As a teacher, I appreciated the quality of instruction. I am already using my new knowledge.
I will say I was very tired at the end of the day. A good sign of how much I was learning. I feel like I got a weeks worth of info in a day.
I also appreciated Kevin sharing about life in Thailand. It made for such a rich experience.
This workshop came at just the right moment for me. I was ready to move on in my learning. This isn’t a day where they point at something and say oh that would be a good photo or stand here and take this picture from this angle. It really is quality teaching in an exotic setting.
What a thrill.
Thank you both!

This is a superb workshop , it gave us a unique insight into Chiang Mai while at the same time teaching us how to use our camera. If you want to learn to use those features on your camera you’ve avoided then this is the workshop for you.
Kevin is a vastly experienced photographer with a real gift for teaching , he quickly finds out what level you and your equipment is at and builds the teaching from there.

I will return and perhaps take the 5 day workshop.

Wonderful day and what a way to see Chiang Mai

Testimonials

I cannot say enough good about Kevin. There are a lot of amazing photographers in this world, but not many are truly exceptional teachers. Kevin truly know how to put the art of photography and the technical aspects of the camera into the right light for each one of his students. He certainly did so for me.
I’ve been traveling for 9 years now and have been a self taught mature photographer for a good majority of that time. I was looking to step my craft up a few notches but just couldn’t seem to get past a certain level… I knew I was grasping all that my camera could do, and the frustration of not being able to capture a shot just the way I wanted it was beginning to kill my creativity. Then, along came Kevin. He was the key to unlocking the magic! Answered so many questions and inspired so many more, then gave me the answers with hands on experience.
I’m inspired all over again. Thank you Kevin!!!
Kevin and Pansa introduced me to the local life in Chiang Mai, which allowed me to feel more comfortable in approaching people in the markets and later with the hill tribes. Along the way I was learning from a well respected professional photographer, who showed excitement for my photography as well as any photo opportunity that came our way. I look forward to my next journey with Kevin and Pansa, where we can create an even more special adventure over a few days. I don’t normally write reviews so this was special for me and I am sure it will be just as special for you.
